Overall, although it has very good reviews from its owners, the Golf Guru 4 is the latest entry into the touchscreen golf GPS device market, following in the footsteps of the Garmin Approach G5 and the OnPar. Unfortunately, it does not seem to have learned from the errors of its predecessors, and falls short of those devices in both user interface, look and feel (awful), and device design.

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

J. Todd (Highlands Ranch, CO USA)

I’ve had my Guru for about a month. I compared it to all of the Sky Caddie models as well as some of the other smaller vendors before purchasing.

First off, it works great. Follow the Quick Start directions and you’ll be off and running in no time. I like that it automatically checks for the latest firmware release and downloads that to your Guru (if needed) everytime you hook it up to download new courses.

It is the smallest unit out there — a little bigger than my Palm Centro but nice and thin/lite. I carry it in my back pocket and pull it out like a yardage book before every shot. It doesn’t get smashed if I sit in the cart either :-)

Review Paraphrased for size – view original review here.

J. Shipley (WA)

This GPS has a lot of features for the price. Accuracy is excellent – it uses 16 channels compared to most others using 12, holds 20 courses as compared to most others holding 10. Customer service is top notch. Number of available courses is growing quickly. If your course isn’t available, you have can request that it be added with an estimated turn around of 7 days.

Golf GPS Report: Sonocaddie v300 GPS Review

Improve your game with color layout patented Sonocaddie V300 Golf GPS units.
The Golf used range finder gives you the precise distance information you need to achieve a higher level of performance.

Sonocaddie V300 GPS Review

Easy of use Construction Quality Functionality

Available on Amazon for $299,00 here.

Utilizing advanced and sophisticated GPS satellite technology, the easy-to-use Sonocaddie V300 GPS calculates the distance from any point on the course to the green or any other target, even without a clear line of sight. Players need to download the particular course–domestic or international–that they will be playing to their Sonocaddie V300 GPS via a PC and detailed course information covering every curve, contour, slope, and sandtrap will be at the placed at the golfer’s fingertips.

Other features built into the Sonocaddie V300 GPS include shot distance measuring and tracking, digital scorecard and game analysis functionality, and personalized course editing and mapping. Shot measuring allows players to leave the driving range behind as you accurately measure the length of individual shots, while the tracking system strings each shot in a round together cumulatively for later review. The unit’s digital scorecard and game analysis functionality allows players to toss out their paper scorecard and tiny pencils for good as they keep track of their game digitally and perform an analysis based on pre-determined data points at the end of each round. And although the V300 is designed to download every known aspect of the courses of the world, no course’s links are static. This is where its editing and mapping functionality comes in. Whether it’s the filling of a bunker, the lengthening of a tee or a removal of a tree, with the V300 players can map, edit and save changes noticed on their favorite fairways right on the spot.

Finally, the unit’s memory and optional Sonostar membership club perks allow for all the flexibility that even the most avid of golfers could need. The V300 ships with enough built-in storage space to simultaneously accomadate data on up to 30 courses as well as track 100 rounds and record 100 scorecards. Course data can always be recorded manually, but the Sonocaddie V300 GPS also includes 5 free course downloads, with each additional download purchased at either a nominal ala carte rate or with unlimited downloads available when registering your V300 and paying a one-time lifetime Sonostar GPS membership fee.

Main Product Features

  • * Personalized course information for each hole and green to match the exact course layout
  • * Digital scorecard and game analysis available at your fingertips

Another great feature that seems a trend with the newer breed of Golf GPS systems is the ability to track scores, distance and everything to do with you round for later comparison.

The only drawback is that the bundled software is for windows based computers only; there is no option for Mac users. If you do have access to a Windows based computer the Sonocaddie V300 is worth serious consideration, over its more popular rivals. With many people who have used one of its competitors and the Sonocaddie V300 preferring the Sonocaddie.

If you want to buy this GPS device, you can get it on sale on Amazon through this link.

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

John A. Macbain

I have used the Sonocaddie on the course, and it is very effective. I especially like knowing the distances to the green even if you are far off the fairway. It agrees quite well with the markers on my home course. I acquired 11 GPS satellites within 5 minutes the first time I powered up the unit.

Overall, the Sky Caddie Sg5 Golf GPS is truly a great gadget that gives you a definitive edge in your game. Try it out!

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

Carol C

The skycaddie works just fine if you know how to use electronic devices. Download the software properly and don’t run over it with your golf cart.
I bought one recently and it’s been fine all round.
The yardage has been accurate and I have not had any satellite drop-outs either.
So many people trash it online, but I think 9 out of 10 users love their SkyCaddie.

Rob G

I have owned several different golf gps devices but I would have to say that the Skycaddie SG5 is the best one I’ve owned to date. The color screen is great and it’s easy to use. For those of you thinking of buying a golf gps device you should consider looking into this one. The downside is that you have to pay an annual subscription fee.

Golf GPS Report: OnPar Golf GPS Review

OnPar Golf GPS  is the first GPS touchscreen introduced to the golf market.

    OnPar Golf GPS Review

Easy of use Construction Quality Functionality

Update: Available on Amazon for $340,65 here.

OnPar Golf GPSOnPar Glof GPS is the first GPS touchscreen introduced to the golf market. We took a fresh look at the GPS rangefinders and how technology could intuitively create a more accurate and user-friendly device. The device needed to incorporate traditional golf information and unrivaled useful features that actually helped the golfer manage and improve their game. All of this information needed to be easily accessible with a single touch of the screen on an ideal sized display that was easy to read. OnPar, was built on these principles and created to help golfers with distance information and the ability to track and suggest personalized club strategies.

The first OnPar Golf GPS was launched to the golf community at the 2009 PGA Merchandise Show with resounding success. In using the most advanced technology, this next generation GPS product has been described as “Your own Personal Caddie.”
It allows you to View each golf hole; Track every shot; and Know your game better. Hand Held GPS Products have evolved, so will your game.
The OnPar is one of the newest golf GPS devices, and with its iPhone-esque touch screen, probably qualifies as the shiniest and sparkliest unit on the market. The device has an unparalleled feature set, including overhead views of each hole, probably the most detailed green views of any device, the ability to determine distances to any point on the course, and easy tracking of a plethora of statistics. The user interface is also clean and intuitive.

    Main Product Features

    • * OnPar is the first GPS Touchscreen designed specifically for Golf.
    • * Stores up to 300 Golf Courses at one time.
    • * View the distance from you, to any target, and remaining yardage to the green with a simple touch of the 3.5″ high resolution touchscreeen.
    • * Track your shots and receive club suggestions based on recent average distance for each club.
A feature that isn’t talked to much about, is the Statistics Screen and Golf Bag Screen. These two features are in my opinion the coolest and biggest differentiators.  The Statistics screen can keep track of up to 18 rounds of golf, it can track how well you play each hole at that course, and it can give you a cumulative average over 18 rounds. The Golf Bag screen allows you to pick and choose the clubs in your bag, with a simple touch of the screen. OnPar Golf GPS Image 2
If you want to buy this GPS device , you can get it on sale on Amazon through this link.
    The Good
    • * Easy tracking of scores and statistics
    • * Intuitive interface
    • * Overhead hole maps
    • * Can determine the distance to any point on a hole
    The Bad
    • * Distance to hazards not marked
    • * Bugs still need to be worked out
    • * Not many courses available yet

Overall the The OnPar has a lot of neat features. Players can touch the hole image at any point and the device will calculate both the distance to that point, and to the green. The flag on the green can be moved to new locations, so the measurement is not always to the center of green. The device will suggest clubs based on the internal stat tracking system. You also can view shot and yardage history.

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

    W. Muller (Aurora, IL)

This GPS is just incredible. All the courses available are free, nothing, nada when you register. Thank God for that! Once you purchase this unit, that is it. No additional cost. The price of this GPS has come down considerably since its release as well.

Review Paraphrased for size – view original review here.

    Charles Sydney “redaggie”

If you like to have state of the art toys, this range finder is it. not really fair to just call it a “range finder” though, b/c these gps untis are so much more these days. I like how it has the touch and drag function like my iPhone- to use for actual pin placements.
Easy to see in the sunlight b/c its bright. I really like the GIR tracking. I expected to have problems with the battery charging b/c the screen is bright, but I haven’t had the problem. I have a laser range finder as well, but it doesn’t come out of my bag anymore.

    uPro Golf GPS by Callaway

Looking to improve your course management skills? Turn to the uPro golf GPS system, which employs state-of-the-art GPS, aerial, and satellite technology to accurately render the details of thousands of golf courses. The uPro starts by providing the avid golfer with aerial and satellite photographs of the golf course, so you can see what the hole looks like before you play it. At the same time, the unit’s built-in GPS system clearly locates the golf course hazards and flagstick, so you know what you’re up against at any moment.

With each glance at the 2.2-inch, high-resolution color screen, you can see a different view of the fairway, check out the upcoming sand traps and water hazards, or receive a distance marker that helps you select the correct club length. Even more impressive, the uPro’s SmartView technology anticipates the hazards that you’ll face on your next shot, so you can plan accordingly based on the strengths of your game. Don’t want to carry water on your second shot? The SmartView technology’s dynamically generated “viewports” will tell you which area of the fairway or rough will provide a water-free path.

The uPro is remarkably easy to carry, with a sleek and unobtrusive design that fits in a pocket or belt holder without interfering with your natural golf swing. In addition, the unit has the quickest startup time of any golf GPS system, with a super-fast GPS locking system. And thanks to the high GPS sensitivity, the uPro remains locked even under the most extreme conditions.

The uPro offers two basic modes for golf course downloads. In Basic mode, the uPro shows the distance to the front and back of all hazards and differentiates the type of hazards. Each hazard is automatically displayed in sequential order based on the current user position, and then is updated as the user moves throughout the hole. Basic mode also provides a green view, with large, easy-to-read numbers that depict the distance to the front, center, and back of the green.

In Pro mode, meanwhile, the device offers a video flyover that lets the user see the layout of the hole from an aerial perspective. From the center of the green, users can see the 100-, 150-, and 200-yard markers. The Pro mode also offers scale-accurate measurements that are used to measure to and from any point on the golf course, even from the outskirts of the rough.

    mruseless “mruseless”

A few bugs, but overall an excellent experience. I’ve now played 30+ rounds with the uPro. Its got some good points and some bad, I suppose this is like any new device, especially one that is from a brand new company.

Review Paraphrased for size – view original review here.

    M. Macey

Let me start by saying that I have never written a review on a product purchased from Amazon. I did this one, because I struggled with making this purchase based on the reviews I read and thought I might add some additional detail to help the next person.

I purchased the uPro about a month ago. The product is impressive. Many reviews claimed some common complaints: “Pro” Mode too hard to see when out in the bright sun; system crashes, long load times from the PC… I have found many of those issues to be true although exaggerated.

Need to measure distances for your next shot? Touch any point on the sunlight-readable display, and Approach shows the precise distance to that exact spot–fairway; hazard; landing area; or the front, middle, and back of the green.

      Get on the Green
Zero in on the pin with Approach’s Green View. Just tap the flag on the map to zoom in on the green–then you can drag the flag to position it where you see it, giving you more accurate yardage.

      Keep Score Digitally
Approach doubles as a digital scorecard for your foursome. After the game, you can save and review the scores on your computer at home.

      Add More Courses
Garmin is constantly adding more courses to their map data, as well as updating and improving their course maps for Approach G5. Download the latest courses from Garmin.com.

Overall, the Garmin Approach G5 golf GPS is a pleasure to use, and its simple touchscreen interface is non-distracting, and helps you get quick and accurate answers out on the course. I like the free database, just be sure your favorite courses are in it.

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

      Bob in PA

I used this for the first time and was very satisfied. I played in the rain on a tree lined course in PA yet the unit had no difficulties obtaining satellites. The couse had several blind greens but having the Approach made the approach shots manageable. I shot an 80!!! Way over my head!!

      B. Conover

I received the Garmin Approach G5 GPS golf unit from my husband as a gift several weeks ago. We had debated between this unit and the Upro but finally decided on the Garmin because it seemed more intuitive and quick to use on the golf course. It only has one real button used to turn it on or off (also used to lock/unlock the screen) and everything else is controlled via the touch screen.

I had checked and most of my local courses were already mapped. I’ve used it for at least 10 rounds and have found it to be very easy to use and the distances are quite accurate. It acquires satellites quickly. I like the ability to place the flag where it actually is. I also like to be able to measure my shots (although I always think I’m hitting a longer shot than I actually do but that’s not the unit’s fault).
