Garmin Approach G5 Review

Update: Available on Amazon for $366,93 here.

The Garmin Approach G5 is simply amazing and it will shake the Golf GPS market in several ways. One of the most remarkable advantages is the usage of the large color touchscreen. Due to its high-sensitive GPS receiver Garmin Approach G5 measures individual shot distances and show exact yardage to fairways, hazards, and greens with high accuracy. When you slide your finger on the screen, the yardage changes instantly. And the unit also gives you a distance-to-the-green from your current position readout at all times. You may also manually move the pin position for accurate to-the-pin distances.
Another very cool feature of this Garmin Approach G5 is the fact that Garmin does not charge for the golf course maps or map updates. This is very nice since the majority of other manufacturers charge significant fees for for initial course map databases and for ongoing map updates.
Update: this amazing GPS-Enabled Golf Handheld from Garmin is currently on sale through this link on Amazon.

Built for Golfers
Weighing in at just 6.8 ounces with batteries and boasting a transflective color 3-inch touchscreen, the Approach is your featherweight fairway guide regardless of the lighting conditions. IPX7 waterproofing means that the device can withstand accidental immersion as well–but thankfully, you’ll be avoiding water hazards, of course.
Eliminate the Guesswork
The Approach displays and updates your exact position on stunningly detailed, preloaded course maps throughout the United States. Click to see Garmin’s current Approach G5 course listing. Approach’s highly sensitive GPS receiver pinpoints your position and removes guesswork from your game. And as you move, Approach automatically updates your position, so you’ll always know your yardage. There’s no subscription or setup fees, and Approach is compliant with USGA rules.
Touch Your Target
Need to measure distances for your next shot? Touch any point on the sunlight-readable display, and Approach shows the precise distance to that exact spot–fairway; hazard; landing area; or the front, middle, and back of the green.
Get on the Green
Zero in on the pin with Approach’s Green View. Just tap the flag on the map to zoom in on the green–then you can drag the flag to position it where you see it, giving you more accurate yardage.
Keep Score Digitally
Approach doubles as a digital scorecard for your foursome. After the game, you can save and review the scores on your computer at home.
Add More Courses
Garmin is constantly adding more courses to their map data, as well as updating and improving their course maps for Approach G5. Download the latest courses from Garmin.com.

Overall, the Garmin Approach G5 golf GPS is a pleasure to use, and its simple touchscreen interface is non-distracting, and helps you get quick and accurate answers out on the course. I like the free database, just be sure your favorite courses are in it.
Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:
Bob in PA
I used this for the first time and was very satisfied. I played in the rain on a tree lined course in PA yet the unit had no difficulties obtaining satellites. The couse had several blind greens but having the Approach made the approach shots manageable. I shot an 80!!! Way over my head!!

I received the Garmin Approach G5 GPS golf unit from my husband as a gift several weeks ago. We had debated between this unit and the Upro but finally decided on the Garmin because it seemed more intuitive and quick to use on the golf course. It only has one real button used to turn it on or off (also used to lock/unlock the screen) and everything else is controlled via the touch screen.
I had checked and most of my local courses were already mapped. I’ve used it for at least 10 rounds and have found it to be very easy to use and the distances are quite accurate. It acquires satellites quickly. I like the ability to place the flag where it actually is. I also like to be able to measure my shots (although I always think I’m hitting a longer shot than I actually do but that’s not the unit’s fault).

Good Site.
I enjoyed the tournament yesterday. Tiger even now finished inside the top 5 after not playing for 5 months so I consider he will come back.

Thank you for a very clear and helpful post. I am definitely a violator of many of these rules. I often find myself conflicted when writing a blog post because I see myself writing more than people want to read, but I feel that I have to do the subject matter justice by thoroughly covering it. I feel that by following some of these rules I end up cutting out important aspects to the discussion. I guess you have to find a balance.
It does seem that everybody is into this kind of stuff lately. Don’t really understand it though, but thanks for trying to explain it. Appreciate you shedding light into this matter. Keep it up
Thx for the wonderful write-up, I have emailed the link to my brother, totally sure he will become a subscriber soon as well.wty1d8
I just purchased the G5 and made sure everything was updated. It has only 1 out of 10 of the local golf courses listed we will see if this changes if not in the next couple weeks i may as well use it to hold down all of the bills i have cuz that is all it is good for just yet.
